Ken-

According to the story (there's a link in my blog item to it), the Japanese mint started to make these coins to commemorate Japanese immigration to Brazil, but they didn't get copyright or trademark permission or whatever, from the right person, i.e. the sculptor who originally created the image. Anyway, they asked the sculptor and he said no. The coin was never distributed, but they've apparently melted all the metal to re-make a different version.
